The treatment of industrial and domestic effluents can be carried out using different physical, chemical or biological processes. In most cases, it is necessary to use more than one of these together so that the effluent returns in adequate conditions to the environment.
The patent documents that describe such technologies generally refer to the equipment or products used or the insertion of new stages in them. In all the cases mentioned, but more frequently in the case of equipment described in these documents, the innovations presented do not constitute a new technology, but only improvements with advantages in relation to existing ones.
The quantitative and/or qualitative survey of patent documents is an important tool for outlining scenarios of technological development in the various sectors. A survey of what has been published in Brazil in the last twenty years, using the EPODO database and comprising documents classified in subclass C02F of the International Patent Classification, referring to "Treatment of water, waste water, sewage, or sludge and sludge", made it possible to evaluate the evolution of the number of patent applications filed over the years (Graph 1). There was a significant increase in the number of deposits in the area from the late 1990s onwards and a growing expansion in deposits made by Brazilian residents. In the Patent Directory, below, some examples of technologies developed in the area for which protection was claimed in the country.
